Milton Erickson contributed extensively to the health sciences, and many of his innovations have been researched empirically. Erickson was also the architect of the wounded healer used his disabilities to advance the lives of others.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Describe three fundamental contributions that Erickson added to the health sciences.
  2. Describe relational factors learned from Erickson that can be used to advance healing.

Dr. Norma Barretta, PhD, studied with Milton Erickson and has been teaching the use of hypnosis, neuro-linguistics, communication skills, personal growth, self-differentiation and the power of language since 1975. She is a partner in the Madrid- Los Angeles Erikson Institute and is frequently a faculty member for the Erickson Foundation Congresses. She currently teaches in Spain, Poland, Italy, Canada and for the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis in the United States. She is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. She has recently been learning about the power of sound from her daughter, Jolie Barretta Keyser, and is now using sound with some of her private patients.
She has taught for the International Society of Hypnosis and the European Society of Hypnosis.

Stephen Lankton, MSW, DAHB, trained under Milton H. Erickson, M.D. from 1975 to 1979, and his efforts at promoting and interpreting Erickson’s approach to hypnosis and therapy at the highest academic levels resulted in the inclusion of chapters in several scholarly publications edited by other luminaries in the field. He is a LCSW psychotherapist in a private practice in Phoenix, Arizona, Lankton conducts workshops internationally (24 countries).

Marilia Baker, MSW, is a multicultural, multilingual Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Scottsdale, Arizona. She is a Board member of the Phoenix Institute of Ericksonian Therapy; member of the Advisory Board for Phoenix Friends of C.G.Jung; International Advisor and Consultant, Centro Ericksoniano de México, and Institutes Editor for the Milton H. Erickson Foundation Newsletter. She conducts presentations and workshops locally and internationally. Ms. Baker is the author of A Tribute to Elizabeth Moore Erickson: Colleague Extraordinaire, Wife, Mother, and Companion, also published in Spanish, Portuguese, and French.

Jeffrey K. Zeig, PhD, is the Founder and Director of the Milton H. Erickson Foundation and is president of Zeig, Tucker & Theisen, Inc., publishers in the behavioral sciences. He has edited, co-edited, authored or coauthored more than 20 books on psychotherapy that appear in twelve foreign languages. Dr. Zeig is a psychologist and marriage and family therapist in private practice in Phoenix, Arizona.
