Demand is growing for couples intensives.
If you have been curious about intensives but weren’t sure how to lead them this workshop is you.
There is a therapy process that gives you all the time in the world to provide your clients with the foundation they need to communicate effectively, without being interrupted by weekly breakdowns. This format gives you time to work on the real issues. Time to practice new skills couples can rely on for life. Time to see and disrupt the exact patterns clients are desperate to change. We’ll also review how to discern which couples will benefit from an intensive model.
You will see a demonstration of how to talk to your existing clients about doing an intensive with you.
This workshop will provide participants with an integrated theoretical framework, e.g., sociological, systemic, somatic, and psychodynamic, to the assessment, formulation, and treatment of trauma within relational therapy. This presentation will focus on the everyday use of witnessing, movement, and art to engage self-soothing, connection, and the re-engagement of voice, touch, and healing in relational therapy.
We currently live in a time of great emotional stress around matters of fairness, justice, ethics, and morality. As couple therapists, we are working with the smallest unit of a society, the two-person system that is the primary attachment partnership. Therapists should have a strong understanding of their own moral and ethical compass when guiding partner behavior that occurs inside and outside of therapy.

The interdisciplinary field of Interpersonal Neurobiology combines all disciplines of science and other fields into one framework and offers a definition of the mind and of mental health that are of practical benefit to those seeking to enhance resilience and well-being. This perspective proposes that one aspect of the mind is an "emergent, self-organizing, embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information." From this view, a healthy mind and health itself emerge from a process called integration–the linkage of differentiated parts.

Ellyn will present a video of a first session with a couple about to separate after a third discovered infidelity. The session, conducted by Ellyn Bader and Peter Pearson focuses on illuminating how one partner’s unresolved family of origin issues create pain for both partners, contribute to infidelity and inhibit the development of the relationship. After the video presentation, Janis Spring will comment. We all learn more when we see therapeutic work discussed from multiple perspectives.
This workshop moves beyond the first phase of RLT to detail the theory and technique of phase two: Family Of Origin Work, trauma and Inner Child Work. In phase one we identified each partner’s relational stance and how the two stances combine to produce the couple’s choreography – the vicious circle they come to us trapped within. Now we travel through the stance back to where it first came from – the particular childhood experiences each partner’s Adaptive Child part was adapting to.
