Hypnosis has been shown to enhance the effects of treatment in general, and CBT in particular, making treatment more effective and with more enduring results. Hypnosis as a field is supported by a body of scientific literature that is broad, deep and fascinating, addressing issues such as information processing, the relationship between the brain and the mind, the dynamics of interpersonal influence, and how suggestions become realities. As practicing clinicians, we have a great deal to learn from studying hypnosis whether we ever intend to become "hypnotists" or not. The role of suggestion - influential communication - is so basic to any healing technique that to ignore, avoid, or underestimate its impact in the therapy process weakens our ability to practice therapy effectively.
Participants will be guided through several exercises to help them learn and practice the construction of six forms of indirect suggestions, four therapeutic binds and four verbal confusion techniques. A demonstration using these forms will illustrate the implementation of this set of language techniques for the induction process and how they elaborate simple metaphor. Reasons for the use of indirect suggestions, binds and confusion in treatment and their effect will be addressed and demonstrated.
During the past several years, we have developed strategies for inducing people to persuade themselves to change dysfunctional attitudes and behavior. Compared with more traditional, direct techniques of persuasion like advertising, self-persuasion produces more powerful, more permanent effects. Specific reference will be made to our research on reducing racial prejudice in schools and risky sexual behavior in young adults.
