BT12 Short Course 02 – Opening to the Heart of Healing – Maggie Phillips, PhD
This workshop will present effective clinical applications of HeartMathTM tools and heart coherence feedback training. Participants will learn positive emotion-focused techniques for self-regulation and emotional stabilization demonstrated to improve clinical outcomes when working with stress, anxiety, panic, grief, anger, and other toxic emotions as well as applications with mindbody symptoms such as insomnia, chronic pain, asthma, and hypertension. Participants will also receive “hands on” training in the use of individual heart rhythm monitors and review ways of using them effectively with a wide variety of clients.
Most couples have at least one partner who withdraws. To bring about lasting change, withdrawers have to engage in the process of therapy and most importantly they must reengage in the relationship. Using video examples, this workshop focuses on how to engage withdrawers and help them reengage with their partners.
Attachment injuries are a specific type of betrayal in romantic relationships that traumatize and fundamentally change basic relation-ship assumptions for injured partners and often create impasses in therapy. This workshop will present seven processes to restore love after an attachment injury and demonstrate elements of the healing process using video.
The therapist will illustrate steps 2-4 of EFT, that is delineating the negative cycle, and unpacking underlying emotions to create a coherent picture of the couples problems as seen through an attachment lens.

This workshop offers participants the wisdom gained from our new scientific understanding of love, and from 25 years of research and clinical practice in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT). The first part of the workshop will present a clear picture of romantic love as the natural arena for personal health, resilience and growth. The second part of the workshop outlines and guides participants into four conversations to enhance your relationship: Recognizing Demon Dialogues, Finding Raw Spots, the pivotal Hold Me Tight conversation, and Forgiving Injuries. Better communication, more effective problem solving, more empathetic caring and improved sexual relationships are just some of the improvements associated with a more secure bond.
Patsy and Josh are a volunteer couple, already in Emotionally Focused Therapy. They are further helped through an EFT session with Sue Johnson. Patsy, suffering from deep wounds of the past, is vulnerable and fearful, and often shuts down—even though she knows her actions prevent connection with Josh. Her husband tries to be caretaker and nurturer. Johnson helps them stay with emotion, expand their connection and shapes their interaction bringing both to a safer, more loving place.
This workshop will summarize the key conceptual underpinnings of EFT; the attachment perspective on the nature of love, and the integration of experiential and systemic perspectives that constitute the EFT theory of change. The basics of EFT practice and the steps of change will be outlined. Interventions will be illustrated with video tapes and transcripts. Exercises will be offered for play and practice. This workshop also will present more recent developments in EFT, including the EFT model of forgiveness.
This workshop will offer a theoretical and clinical orientation to the treatment of trauma, personal and relational, in couples therapy. The regulation of emotion and the healing power of attachment events will be emphasized.
This workshop will outline the use of attachment theory in the assessment of Relationship problems, setting of treatment goals, creation of change events and moment to moment interventions in emotionally focused couples therapy.
