Facilitating the RNA/DNA epigenetics of creating new consciousness is the next step in the evolution of psychotherapy. Restricting psychotherapy to the limitations of the cognitive-behavioral level is becoming a disservice to psychology. We must embrace the bioinformatics of the new technological devices that make it possible to assess and facilitate the dynamics of gene expression and brain plasticity economically within a single session of psychotherapy.

EMDR therapy is widely recognized as an effective trauma treatment by organizations such as the World Health Organization and the Department of Defense. In addition, 20 randomized trials demonstrate the positive effects of the eye movement component. Unlike other empirically supported approaches, it is unnecessary for the client to describe the trauma memory in detail or do daily homework to achieve positive effects. This presentation will demonstrate the eight phases of EMDR treatment with both adults and children through discussion, exercises and client videotapes.

Each couple describes a core scene which happens over and over again from which they want relief and therapists attempt to offer it. Imago Couples Therapy posits that while each core scene is unique, the theme of each couple’s story is identical: ruptured connection and the desire for restoration. All symptoms are branches on this tree. This workshop will develop and demonstrate that theme, and describe and demonstrate a singular intervention that helps couples restore connection.

Short Description:
Psychotherapy is an exploration of how individuals can forge positive, therapeutic responses to life challenges. This workshop focuses on the three core connections that allow clients to do this: (1) Positive intention and goals (“towards a positive future”); (2) Somatic Centering (“embodied presence”); and (3) Field Resources (“positive connections beyond the problem”). We will see how in a repetitive problem, all three of these connections are typically absent. More importantly, we will see how clients may be helped to developed and sustain these positive connections while engaging with challenging material—e.g., a past trauma, a present difficulty, or a future possibility. Participants will be offered multiple techniques and examples, as well as several demonstrations to illustrate this positive orientation to psychotherapy.

This three-hour workshop is designed to give an overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and is intended for mental health professionals who wish to acquaint themselves with the treatment or who are considering further training in DBT. DBT balances change-based technology (behavior therapy) with acceptance-based principals (validation). Both of these strategies will be introduced along with dialectical strategies (those that provide the balance of acceptance and change). The frame of DBT will be highlighted and the modes and functions of comprehensive DBT will be defined. Methods of instruction include lecture and videotapes of treatment to demonstrate the principles and strategies of DBT.

Short Description:
Ms. Ackerman will be speaking about love in a time of illness, something she has lived with for many years, and has written about in her most recent book, One Hundred Names for Love. One day, Ackerman’s 74-year-old husband, a gifted author and professor, suffered a savage stroke. When he regained awareness he was afflicted with “global aphasia”—total loss of language—and could utter only a single syllable: “mem.” The standard therapies yielded only frustration. Diane soon found, however, that by harnessing their deep knowledge of each other, and her understanding of language and the brain, she could guide Paul back to the world of words.

What do you do when patients present difficulties—for example, when they don’t do homework, get angry at the therapist, are afraid to reveal, go off on tangents, arrive late to session, demand special entitlements, engage in self-harm behaviors between sessions, jump from one crisis to another? Specialized techniques, adapted from psychodynamic, supportive, Gestalt, interpersonal, and other psychotherapeutic modalities, are often needed.

Defining mind as an “embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information” allows us to move deeply into understanding new ways of seeing the interconnections among brain, interpersonal relationships and the mind. Dr. Siegel outlines strategies to monitor and modify energy and information flow with more clarity and power, and also describes how the concept of integration can serve as an organizing principle that illuminates mindsight, harmony, resilience, and vitality.

A theory addressing these principles, called Neural Darwinism, will be discussed. This theory has a direct bearing on our understanding of the neural basis of consciousness, a key issue in psychotherapy.

Why does a grown adult need to be reminded by a therapist that he or she no longer needs to feel or act like a helpless child? Why does someone treat a new boyfriend or girlfriend unfairly as if he or she is the same as the last one who hurt him or her? One answer: Global thinking. Most people – therapists included – are global thinkers, people who metaphorically “see the forest but not the trees.” Global thinking is highly correlated with depression as well as PTSD.

Short Description:
Pulitzer prize winning author Thomas Friedman recently observed, “The era of average is over. In the 21st century, everyone is going to have to find something extra to stand out in their field.” What can mental health and substance abuse professionals do to enhance their performance? Available evidence makes clear that attending a typical continuing education workshop, specializing in the treatment of a particular problem, or learning a new treatment model does little to improve effectiveness. Over the last decade, Scott D. Miller, Ph.D., together with colleagues at the International Center for Clinical Excellence, have been tracking the outcomes of thousands of clinicians around the world. Along the way, they have identified specific practices that separate highly effective from average clinicians.

Short Description:
Freud, Jung and Adler were the originators of psychotherapy. Adlerian psychotherapy is an effective brief therapy model that is still popular around the world as it integrates successful interventions from many other approaches. Adler’s ideas highlight the importance of not only understanding the individual but the social context. This approach emphasizes working from a multicultural orientation and highlights personal responsibility. This approach uses a four-step process: Engagement, Assessment, Insight, and Reorientation. The focus of the treatment is positive as the therapist uses encouragement strategies to help the client identify their assets and strengths. DVD examples of actual sessions will be used to highlight the process and demonstrate how short-term change is possible with this approach.

So many books and seminars have emerged over the last decade with discovering one’s “purpose” as their theme. What are the cultural and historic reasons for this, given the unique shifts and challenges of our time? How do we engender the passion for the possible in our human development while discovering what that “possible” is? Is it even possible to become an artist of destiny, capable of decoding the patterns, clues, and relationships that point you to a mystery that cannot be known directly? Ultimately when it comes down to our fascination with purpose, are we fooling ourselves or are we present at the birth of an opportunity that exceeds our imagination.

Now researchers delineated empirically supported common dimensions shared by all anxiety, mood, and related emotional disorders, including higher order temperaments, mood distortions, and extensive patterns of avoidance. In this presentation Barlow suggests a new integrated diagnostic scheme and the identification of psychological treatment principles targeting temperament directly.

Couples therapy typically pathologizes porn use while legitimizing the grievances of the user’s partner. While this approach may seem logical, it rarely increases sexual/relationship satisfaction. How do we hold both partners while they struggle to define their behavior, contract, and emotions? This talk examines a different approach to intrapsychic conflict and power struggles over porn use. We’ll explore underlying rela-tional issues, including: Is conflict about pornography a way to avoid confronting defi-cits in the sexual (or non-sexual) relationship? Are one or both partners acting out body image issues? Is porn use infidelity?

Volatile couples come to couples therapy with a fearsome mixture of trauma, devastated dreams, and defensive attitudes. If you ask about their goals or how you can help, you quickly get intense cross complaints, and pressure to fix their partner. Simply trying to understand their problems and asking about their goals can be a toxic beginning as their defensiveness and trauma get re-triggered. This innovative approach is the result of 30 years of seeing couples and searching for a better beginning. In this workshop you will understand how to have each person identify their role in the distress, accept accountability for self-change, identify personal growth changes that are a stretch, create the foundation to work as a team and do it all with a spirit of cooperation and positive strokes. Do all this and more in the first session.

The workshop will explore clinical applications of the Polyvagal Theory. The Polyvagal Theory links the evolution of the autonomic nervous system to affective experience, emotional expression, facial gestures, vocal communication and contingent social behavior, and provides a plausible explanation of several features that are compromised during stress and observed in numerous psychiatric disorders. Humans have evolved as highly social and mutually dependent beings. Yet, when overwhelmed by stress and threat, our autonomic nervous systems adaptively dictate more primordial strategies.

The Love Code provides a metaphor to explore the neural mechanisms underlying how and why we attach, bond, fall in love and seek out safe and trusted others in an unsafe world. This presentation will explore the body’s need for intimate engagement and social bonding from an adaptive perspective. Within the theoretical context of the Polyvagal Theory, the presentation will illustrate how specific features in our social environment may trigger neurophysiological systems, through a process of “neuroception,” that enables us either to be fearful and disengage or to feel safe and enter enduring intimate relations.

We will review the Family Recovery Research Project, with an emphasis on the couple, outlining the stages of active addiction and recovery and the key themes and tasks of development that arise, along with the implications for couples therapy at every stage when the culture remains chronically stressed, chaotic and FAST.

Short Description:
What do most couples really want from sex? It isn’t endless orgasms, or sex around the clock. Most people want the same old things: connection, pleasure, excitement, mystery, validation. And magic. When the prospect of getting these is slim, satisfaction declines, and desire falls. This is not a “dysfunction;” improving genital “function” is not the answer. The key, instead, often lies in addressing power struggles and control issues; the existential challenges of adulthood; and the need for a new vocabulary. We will discuss how to move couples from perfunctory, infrequent sex to a more vibrant and intriguing experience. We’ll also look at what therapists need internally to help couples discuss sex.

Everybody lies. Some lies are loving and harmless. But, others are enormously destructive. Couples’ patterns of deception often begin innocently but end in couples destroying the love they once had. Self deception, conflict avoidance and felony lies all undermine commitment and connection. We’ll use clinical videos and transcripts to identify and disrupt deception. You’ll learn to successfully confront the evasiveness, hypocrisy and avoidance that keep couples developmentally arrested and differentiation failing.

Short Description:
Why has depression been seen as a “woman’s disease”? Depression is not unwomanly, but many feel it as unmanly—setting up what Real calls, “compound depression.” Men, he says, feel ashamed of feeling ashamed, depressed about being depressed,” causing them to hide it, and causing those around them—even medical professionals—to shy away from confronting the condition. Even more important, however, is the fact that many men express depression differently than women. Real will speak of “covert depression” which lies at the core of many of men’s typical “bad behaviors.” like drinking, workaholism, withdrawal, and anger.

BT12 Super Course 03 – Harnessing Mindfulness: Tailoring the Practice to the Problem – Ronald Siegel, PsyD Mindfulness-based psychotherapy is the most popular new treatment approach in the last decade—and for good reason. Mindfulness practices hold great promise both for our own personal development and as remarkably powerful tools to augment virtually every form of psychotherapy. Mindfulness is not, however, a one-size-fits-all remedy. In this workshop you’ll learn how mindfulness practices work to alleviate psychological distress, and how to creatively tailor them to meet the needs of diverse people and conditions. We’ll examine how to use mindfulness practices to help resolve disorders such as anxiety, depression, and stress-related medical problems, while enriching and enlivening therapeutic work.

BT12 Super Course 04 – Finding Freedom from Pain: Solving the Complex Puzzle of Trauma and Pain – Peter Levine, PhD, & Maggie Phillips, PhD The incidence of persistent and chronic pain conditions have become a public health crisis with more people suffering from chronic pain than from diabetes, cancer, and heart disease combined. The cost of suffering (human and financial) is huge and in part results from the fact that pain is so complex—ranging far beyond the intersection of neural transmission and sensory experience. The puzzle of pain involves a complicated labyrinth of emotions, sensations, culture, individual experience, genetics, spiritual meaning, as well as habitual physiological reactions. This workshop presents both the art and science of working with the resources of the body to reverse the effects of physical, emotional, and trauma related pain.
