The daunting task of leading clients from a disempowering sense of external control to an actualizing sense of inner control becomes doable by helping them reframe their behavior from actions to language, i.e., seeing actions as an attempt to send a message or a signal to the world around them. This practical idea will be illustrated in role-play demonstrations of the WDEP system: Wants, Doing (or behavior as language), self-Evaluation, and action Planning.
The Basic Foot Print is a process model of change in therapy that represents and identifies Erickson's method for change. It is a general umbrella under which we should be able to place any step of change or intervention. Encounters that follow the Basic Foot Print create change and any therapy that steps through these stages reflects Dr. Erickson's approach and echoes his legacy. The steps are: matching/connecting, blending, utilizing, introducing ambiguity (disrupting stasis), reframing and co-creating outcomes. An in-depth understanding of steps within the Basic Footprint will be taught, demonstrated and practiced.

Disturbed sleep painfully contributes to depression. Paradoxically, client's symptoms become pathways that disarms suffering, yielding to the solace of sound sleep. Clients then pace healing to the rhythms of restorative sleep, without excess alarm. Ericksonian-based trance language directly addressing disturbed sleep first, and indirectly addressing depression will be offered.

IC01 Workshop 05 - Reframing: The Many Patterns of Meaning - Steve Andreas, MA

at least seventeen distinctly different simple patterns for changing that meaning through reframing.
Exquisite therapists like Erickson and Satir used nearly all these patterns, while most therapists
use only a few. Come add to your skills.
This workshop will use PowerPoint images, research, theories, examples and experiential exercises to demonstrate how therapeutically playful interaction with others may create lasting solutions by producing spiritually-uplifting catharsis and creatively explorative trance states capable of replacing sensations of helplessness with sensations of empowerment, enhancing sensations of meaningful relatedness, encouraging immune system functioning and possibly serving to “wake up” otherwise dormant genetic functioning and activate brain plasticity.
This workshop will address the rapid treatment of trauma by utilizing both Mindfulness practice and Ericksonian orientation’s that understand the importance of the symptom as a pathway to inner healing. We will review the clinical skills of tracking, pacing and utilization of the symptom for accessing the un-conscious and inner resources with mindfulness and trance. The workshop will highlight Milton Erickson’s use of storytelling, metaphor and rapid trance induction as well as the use of mindfulness practice for framing, reframing and de-framing for the immediate reorganization of transforming somatic-affective experience into new healing rhythms in the body.
Shifting from worry to wonder releases conscious struggle and makes more energy available for rapid recovery and healing. Reframing worry as a request from the unconscious mind for a plan to survive an anticipated crisis can facilitate the lowering of stress hormones and muscle tension while enhancing immune system health. Knowing you can access a deep unconscious wisdom and support frees the conscious mind and prepares it to receive a surprise.
