May 13, 2016
Short Description:
This one-hour presentation will demonstrate cross-dialogic and other strategic techniques for shepherding couples toward secure functioning, an attitudinal and behavioral expectation that couples operate as a two-person psychological system. Because the concept of secure-functioning is principle based and not personality based, the success of secure-functioning relationships does not depend upon attachment orientation. The presentation will endeavor to help the clinician utilize psychobiological strategies to help clarify partner attachment strategies, true desires, and unspoken agendas in couple therapy.

Short Description:
The psychobiologically oriented couple therapist understands that the intersubjective, phenomenological process operating in primary attachment relationships relies heavily on fast acting implicit memory systems. Because of this phenomenon partners in a relationship rarely know what they are doing or why, and so they confabulate meaning in the absence of real understanding. Additionally, partners in couple therapy maintain hidden agendas and use deception in order to protect themselves from loss.

Now that you understand the neuropsychology of attachment, how are you going to use it in a session where one partner is yelling at the other for abandoning him/her who is in turn trying to take refuge under the coach? Learn how to put theory into practice using an experiential approach to explore old neural circuitry around attachment and build new pathways. We will be using the present moment and mindfulness integrated into therapy to slow things down and rewire the brain.

Short Description:
The interdisciplinary field of Interpersonal Neurobiology combines all disciplines of science and other fields into one framework and offers a definition of the mind and of mental health that are of practical benefit to those seeking to enhance resilience and well-being. This perspective proposes that one aspect of the mind is an "emergent, self-organizing, embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information." From this view, a healthy mind and health itself emerge from a process called integration–the linkage of differentiated parts.

Milton Erickson did fascinating work with deep states of hypnosis. Neuroscience has caught up to what he knew; that the mind/brain reorganizes memory and develops creative solutions in deep states of trance. In these deep states, the brain releases a neuropeptide called "anandamide," a Sanskrit word for bliss, which has healing qualities for difficult problems. This demonstration shows a method for accomplishing this healing state.

Short Description:
Working at the Department of Speech Pathology, University Clinic, Heidelberg Germany in the 80s, most patients with voice disorders came with expectations getting medical treatment. But resistance to psychological approaches were common. Being confronted with this resistance many times created a very indirect approach of self-hypnosis training (which actually is a trance induction). Tailoring the standard approach to different patients and symptoms will be discussed, as well as how to use this in group therapy.

Sex addiction destroys trust in relationships, traumatizing the partner, the sex addict, and the family system. Relational trauma left untreated will have both parties and the entire system crumbling. Attunement, communication, and empathy (ACE) are the three pronged stool that supports the long, and sometimes arduous, journey to restoring trust. The goal is to recognize the signs of relational trauma in both parties, and compare the difference between relational trauma and co-dependence

Why does great sex so often fade for couples who claim to love each other as much as ever? Why doesn’t good intimacy guarantee good sex? When you love , how does it feel and when you Desire how is it different? Loss of Desire brings many people into our offices. It is the prime sexual complaint that leads relational unhappiness, infidelity and even divorce. For the most part, sexuality has been relegated to sex therapy and couple therapy has been a desexualized practice. Yet, love in our digital age puts sex at the center of couples’ lives.

In the old way of thinking, couples were depicted as a communication system that could be improved with relational skills or as interacting psychopathologies needing treatment by a mental health professional. In the new way of thinking, couples are a system of mutually reinforcing interactions that create anxiety or safety, wounding or healing. They also are the source of culture and the fulcrum of social transformation. What happens in the couple happens in the culture; what happens in the culture happens in the couple.

Many schools of psychotherapy have been derived from the seminal work of Milton H Erickson M.D., including strategic therapy, interactional therapy, NLP and solution focused therapy. In some approaches hypnosis is central; in other approaches hypnosis is more peripheral. This class features two experts personally trained by Dr. Erickson, each of whom approach psychotherapy from somewhat different perspectives. In his approach, Possibility Therapy, Bill O'Hanlon epitomizes the strengths of a solution focused orientation. In his experiential approach, Jeffrey Zeig shades treatment in the direction of developing dramatic reference experiences.

Furthermore, the more we learn about the neuroscience of depression, especially neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, the more important well designed experiential learning processes become in treatment.

His workshop will explore how generative psychotherapy can help clients activate the creative consciousness needed to live their lives in positive, fulfilling ways. This process requires the cultivation of self-leadership (and self-COACH) skills, such that a person’s performance self and observer self-work in a mutually respectful, harmonious pattern. The workshop presents some core methods of this approach, including somatic modeling, self-scaling, and engaging the creative unconscious. A demonstration and multiple case examples will illustrate how such methods can allow psychotherapy to be a deeply positive, effective conversation.
